The biological ranking (or total order) and the ranking in the marriage are distinguished. The biological ranking is the order of children's birth for a woman during her life, whatever her marriage situation is. The oldest child is the child of order 1. The order in the marriage concerns the children of married women: it is the order of children's birth within the current marriage of the woman. It is always inferior or equal to the total order.
