Goods classification used within the EU for the purposes of foreign trade statistics and customs duty. The classification is based on the Harmonized System (HS) which is a classification of goods by criteria based on raw materials and the stage of production of commodities. The CN was introduced in 1988 together with the HS. The CN takes over the six-digit numerical codes of the HS and adds an additional level of detail in the form of an 8-digit numerical code. The CN is revised annually.
Linked classifications:
(1) Harmonized System (HS);
(2) Statistical Classification of Products by Activity in the European Economic Community (CPA);
(3) Standard International Trade Classification (SITC).
