Employment: + 0.3% in Q1 2020 and + 2.9% over 12 months
19-06-2020 | STATEC

The COVID-19 pandemic crisis has impacted the evolution of employment in the first quarter of 2020: the increase in the first quarter was limited to +0.3% (compared to +0.8% in the previous quarter). While the evolution of employment during the first two months of 2020 was comparable to that of 2019, the lockdown from mid-March 2020 is slowing its growth. Administration and other public services (+4.9% year-on-year) and construction activities (+3.9% year-on-year) are the most dynamic branches. A decrease in the number of employees was observed for the "Specialised activities and support services" branch between the last quarter of 2019 and the first quarter of 2020 (-2.1%) with a sharp drop in the number of employees for temporary employment agency activities (-24.6% year-on-year). These activities are the first to suffer when an economic crisis looms on the horizon.
