Reduced population growth in 2023

On 1 January 2024, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg will have 672,050 inhabitants, 1.7% more than a year earlier. This population increase is less than in 2022 (an increase of 2.4%), a year marked by the arrival of large numbers of Ukrainian war refugees. This growth rate of 1.7% is one of the lowest in the last decade (where the rate varied from 2.0 to 2.5%), with the exception of the COVID-19 years (growth rates in 2020 and 2021 of 1.4 and 1.7% respectively).

Most of this population growth is due to migration: 26,964 migrants arrived in the country in 2023 and 16,588 left.

In 2023, 6,320 babies were born, 175 fewer than in 2022. The total fertility rate of 1.25 children per woman is the lowest it has been for several decades.

In 2023, 4,431 people will die, 18 fewer than in 2022. Life expectancy at birth is 85.0 years for women and 81.0 years for men.

In 2023, the natural balance (births - deaths) was 1,889 people, while net migration (arrivals - departures) was 10,376 people[1].
