Economic and financial data
Purpose
The Special Data Dissemination Standard (SDDS) was established by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to guide members that have, or might seek, access to international capital markets in the provision of their economic and financial data to the public. Both the General Data Dissemination System (GDDS) and the SDDS are expected to enhance the availability of timely and comprehensive statistics and therefore contribute to the pursuit of sound macroeconomic policies; the SDDS is also expected to contribute to the improved functioning of financial markets.
SDDS Plus
The SDDS Plus was established in 2012 and builds on the SDDS to guide member countries on the provision of economic and financial data to the public in support of domestic and international financial stability. The SDDS Plus aims to include economies that play a leading role in international capital markets and has institutions that are interconnected; through channels such as interbank lending, security lending, repurchase agreements, and derivatives contracts. The SDDS Plus thus goes beyond the focus of the SDDS on access to international capital markets by putting an emphasis on countries that have systematically important financial sectors that are integral to the working of the international monetary system. Nevertheless, all SDDS subscribers can adhere to the SDDS Plus, and, are indeed, encouraged to do so.
Subscription
Subscription to the SDDS was opened in early April 1996 with a letter from the IMF's Managing Director to all IMF Members and Governors. Although subscription is voluntary, it carries a commitment by a subscribing member to observe the standard and to provide certain information to the IMF about its practices in disseminating economic and financial data. A member country's subscription, which can be made at any time, is to be communicated in writing to the Secretary of the IMF. To date, there have been 78 subscriptions to the SDDS (31 countries now adhere to SDDS Plus).
Luxembourg joined the SDDS standard in 2005 and then, the SDDS Plus standard in 2019.
