Public statistics
Public statistics refer to the production of statistical surveys and the use of these surveys by government departments, public bodies or private bodies entrusted with a public service mission.
The Statistical System Luxembourg
The Luxembourg Statistical System (LSS) is coordinated by STATEC. Indeed, according to article 3 of the law of 10th July 2011 on the organization of official statistics in Luxembourg, «STATEC ensures, in consultation with the Committee for Public Statistics, the coordination of the national statistical system.»
The LSS is organised according to the principle of statistical centralization. According to article 3 of the statistics law, «STATEC coordinates the national statistics system in consultation with the Committee for Official Statistics. It ensures the harmonization of statistical methods, definitions and classifications and ensures the application of European and international standards in this area.»
Nevertheless, the needs for statistical data in relation to the available resources mean that STATEC makes extensive use of collaboration with other data producers as well as with public and private research centres. Alongside its own surveys, STATEC therefore centralizes the data available from Luxembourg administrations to carry out its studies, but also to make them accessible to its users on a single platform.
Certain surveys and studies are carried out in close collaboration with the University of Luxembourg and research centers in Luxembourg, in particular the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER), and abroad.
European Statistical System (ESS)
STATEC is part of the ESS, the partnership between EUROSTAT – the Statistical Office of the European Union, the national statistical institutes (NSIs), as well as the other national statistical authorities responsible in each Member State for the development, production and dissemination of European statistics.
Central Balance Sheet
The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC) is the manager of the Central Balance Sheet (CBSO).
The CBSO archives and publishes the financial data of Luxembourg companies and traders subject to the online filing of their annual accounts on the electronic platform for the collection of financial data (eCDF) and STATEC uses the data of the CBSO internally for the establishment of statistics.
The Ministry of Justice and STATEC collaborate within the Accounting Standards Commission (Commission des Normes Comptables - CNC) on the various aspects related to the electronic filing of annual accounts - e.g. Standardized Chart of Accounts (SCA), eCDF validation forms and rules, legislation and regulations.

European Statistics Competition
Luxembourg is participating in the European Statistics Competition (ESC) 2023. This competition is organized by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, and aims to promote students' curiosity and interest in statistics. The ESC is aimed at secondary school students, who challenge each other by solving statistical exercises, hunting for information and producing analyses.
First national, then European, this competition invites each participating team to work in groups to test their theoretical knowledge, to take an interest in the data produced by the actors of official statistics and to discover or rediscover their societal stake!
