Population growth boosted
Population growth boostedAfter a demographic slowdown in 2020, the population of the Grand Duchy increased by 10,667 people during 2021, so that on January 1, 2022, 645,397 people were living in Luxembourg. This population increase, mainly due to net immigration, is returning to levels close to those observed before the outbreak of the COVID-19 health crisis.
In the course of 2021, a natural balance (births - deaths) of 2,201 people and a net migration (arrivals - departures) of 9,376 people are observed. The share of international migration in population growth is therefore 87.9% in 2021.
Between January 1, 2021 and January 1, 2022, the population increased by 1.7%. This increase is slightly less than that observed before the pandemic (this rate fluctuated between 2 and 2.5%) but is higher than that observed in 2020 (1.4%).
As of January 1, 2022, the average age of the population is 40.4 years for women and 39.0 years for men. Foreign inhabitants are significantly younger than Luxembourgers. The average age for Luxembourg women is 42.4 years compared to 38.1 years for foreign women. For Luxembourg men, the average age is 40.0 years compared to 38.0 years for foreigners.
