STATEC Library
The Economic and Statistical Documentation Centre (CEDES) - also known as the STATEC Library - is a library specialising in economic, demographic, statistical and social issues. Indeed, one of STATEC's missions is to "collect general documentation concerning statistics, as well as demographic, economic and social theories and facts" (Law of 10 July 2011).
STATEC's documentation service has officially existed since the early 1960s. The STATEC library also has a luxembourgensia collection dating back to the mid-19th century, with the oldest work in this collection dating from 1844.
What is the STATEC library composed of?
The STATEC library's collection consists of the following works and publications:
- Luxembourgensia collection: STATEC publications and Luxembourg publications
- Monograph collection
- Fonds of periodicals
- Publications from national statistical institutes
- Publications of the statistical offices of the Greater Region;
- Publications from international institutions (Eurostat, OECD, IMF, ILO, UN, World Bank, WHO, etc.);
- Scientific publications by country (academic and other);
- Yearbooks (by country)
How can I consult the library's collections?
The STATEC library is part of the Luxembourg library network, and its holdings can be consulted using the common search engine for libraries in the bibnet.lu network. Currently 8847 works are catalogued.
(By selecting both "bibnet.lu" and "STATEC" (search profile) in the a-z.lu search window, users can access the "recent" holdings of the STATEC library.)
The library's holdings are currently being entered and catalogued. The "old" collection is not yet fully catalogued in the a-z.lu search engine. The library provides readers with a file of bibliographic references by author and subject for this part of its collection.
STATEC publications
A first statistical body had already been created in 1855. This "permanent statistical commission" - made up of 5 members, to be renewed every 3 years, who divided up the various statistical fields - was in principle supposed to "draw up a plan for general statistics for the country". In reality, these provisions were not put into effect and the "commission" was not renewed. After other similar projects with limited success, it was not until 1962 that the Organic Law established STATEC, which is the old acronym for the Central Service for Statistics and Economic Studies (created on 22 June 1963).
1900-1922 - Permanent Statistical Commission
1923-1940 - Statistical Office
1945-1962 - Office for General Statistics / Service for Economic Studies and Documentation
1963 to present - STATEC (Institut national de la statistique et des études économiques du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg)
