- We are looking for two Applied Researchers to join STATEC Research in early 2023, one with a focus on Subjective Well-being and the other focusing on Environmental Economics. Details of the posts are available at the bottom of this page in the Vacancies section. The initial appointment is for two years, with the possibility of extension. We offer an attractive salary and research allowance. The deadline for application is the 31st of December 2022, or the 28th of November to be interviewed during the EEA European Job Market.
- Beginning the 6th of October, Francesco Sarracino will give a series of four lectures on sustainability, wellbeing, postgrowth, and neohumanism. The first lecture is entitled “Happier and sustainable. Possibilities for a post-growth society”. Registration is free. The lectures are organised in partnership with Plaidons Responsable by Caritas Luxembourg and House of Startups Luxembourg.
- In October, Francesco Sarracino will present “Trust predicts compliance with COVID-19 containment policies: Evidence from ten countries using big data” at the 16th Conference Social Monitoring and Reporting in Europe: Quality of Life in Europe at Risk? Effects of the Pandemic and Recent Social Change.

- Serge Allegrezza, Kelsey O’Connor, Chiara Peroni, and Charles-Henri DiMaria, and gave the opening plenary session at the International Association for Research on Income and Wealth 37th General Conference in August, presenting respectively: “Trust in Official Statistics across Europe: Evidence from Two Waves of Eurobarometer Using Multilevel Models”, “Life Satisfaction and Noncognitive Skills: Effects on the Likelihood of Unemployment”, “Productivity Gains from Job Satisfaction in Europe”, and “From economic productivity to productive well-being: the role of life satisfaction and adjusted net savings.”
- Maxime Pettinger presented and discussed “Measurement of Economic Insecurity in the European Union between 2005 and 2020” at the International Association for Research on Income and Wealth 37th General Conference in August.

- From June 1st to 4th approximately 90 speakers from around the world came together in Luxembourg to attend our conference “Well-Being 2022: Knowledge for informed decisions.” The event included: opening remarks from the Minister of the Economy (Franz Fayot); a round table discussion on how policy-makers can integrate the findings from well-being studies (including panelists from Luxembourg, Martijn Burger (Erasmus Happiness Economics Research Organization (EHERO)), Nancy Hey (What Works Centre for Wellbeing), and Katherine Scrivens (OECD)); a presentation of the new PIBien-etre Report about quality of life in Luxembourg, by Serge Allegrezza (Director of STATEC); an opening talk from a civil society activist (author and filmmaker, John De Graaf); a workshop on the World Database of Happiness by its creator Ruut Veenhoven; four keynote speeches by Stefano Bartolini, Andrew Clark, Carol Graham, and Andrew Oswald; and a lively and fun social dinner. - In March, Kelsey O’Connor was appointed Associate Editor of economics for the Journal of Happiness Studies, a leading international journal on subjective well-being or happiness.
- Francesco Sarracino was interviewed for an in-depth article on the pursuit of happiness, published by the popular scientific outlet New Scientist in January, available here.
- Xi Chen presented “The Effects and Transmission of COVID-19 Shocks: A Global Value Chain perspective” in STATEC’s SEMECO seminar series in January.
- In January, Kelsey O’Connor will present “From tweets to well-being: Sentiment analysis reveals how well-being evolved in Europe during the Covid-19 pandemic” at the Well-being and Public Economics workshop hosted by the Berlin Network of Research on Well-being.
- In November, Chiara Peroni, Charles-Henri DiMaria, and Francesco Sarracino, each gave presentations at the Symposium on Well-being and Productivity organized by the Centre for the Study of Living Standards (Canada) and The Productivity Institute (United Kingdom). They presented, respectively: “Productivity gains from job satisfaction”, “From economic productivity to productive well-being”, and “A measure of well-being productivity based on the World Happiness Report.”
- Francesco Sarracino and Kelsey O’Connor, with Hiroshi Ono, published the opinion piece “Lost decades or success story: well-being in Japan” with the newsmagazine Nikkei Asia in November.
- In October, Cesare Riillo presented “Immigration and Entrepreneurship: Cross-country Evidence” at the IECER 2021 Interdisciplinary European Conference on Entrepreneurship Research.

- In November, Golnaz Amjadi successfully defended her dissertation, which was also highlighted by the leading Swedish industry magazine IndustriPress, English version available here. - Kelsey O'Connor coauthored the article entitled Job policies that offer generous unemployment benefits create more happiness – for everyone with Robson Morgan. It was released in November with The Conversation, a general audience source of academic research news and views.

- On the 8th of July, Prime Minister Xavier Bettel referenced the results of a recent STATEC survey and Regards in an address to the Chamber of Deputies, regarding the decline in mental health during the COVID-19 lockdown. Media coverage of the Regards includes: Luxembourg Times (English), RTL (English), Wort (French), Paperjam (French), Yahoo Actualities (French), and Le Quotidien (French).
- STATEC Research received competitive funding for two COVID-19 related projects in May. One, led by Francesco Sarracino, will use sentiment analysis and Twitter data for the year of 2020 to assess the impacts of COVID-19 on preferences, attitudes, and well-being in Luxembourg and five other European countries. The second, led by Cesare Riilo, contributes to a multinational survey regarding people’s preferences on the use of a contact tracing app to fight the pandemic using a new online probability-based access panel based on STATEC data. Funding is from the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR).
- Kelsey O’Connor was added to the Advisory Panel of What Works Centre Wellbeing in the United Kingdom in May. The Centre provide accessible wellbeing evidence to improve / refocus decision making among individuals, businesses, and governments.
- STATEC Research recently collaborated with LISER and the University of Luxembourg on the first working note on the economic effects of COVID-19 in Luxembourg.
- Francesco Sarracino was invited in March to join the World Wellbeing Panel. Comprised of approximately the 40 best-known scholars in subjective well-being in the world, the aim of the Panel is to promote well-being as the ultimate purpose of all major decision makers, particularly government.
- The 2020 update to the OECD report Financing SMEs and Entrepreneurs, which includes a Luxembourg country report based on new data from 2019, will be launched on the 22nd of April.
- The Observatory of Competitiveness (ODC) and National Productivity Council (Conseil National de la Productivité) were recently recommended by the OECD. Recent publications include the Bilan Compétitivité 2019: Focus sur l’entrepreneuriat (parts in English and others in French). The NPC is led by Serge Allegrezza and includes Chiara Peroni as a board member.
- Cesare Riillo presented on "Gem Data Quality" and "Entrepreneurship and Growth: A Structural Equation Model and a Composite Index" (virtually) at the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Annual Meeting, Miami, USA, on the 2nd of March.
