Salaries by municipality in Luxembourg Highest median salaries in Niederanven, lowest in Wiltz
The new "Salaries by commune in Luxembourg" table provides new statistics on the distribution of salaries in Luxembourg. The table makes it possible to compare salaries between different regions, and to analyse the quality of life of citizens as well as the economic impact on the different communes. This new data is important for economic planning and the development of public policies. They are used in economic research and analysis to study a range of issues, such as pay inequality. This publication promotes public transparency.
The new table contains the average and median salary, as well as the first and ninth decile of the salary distribution by municipality. The median wage divides the wage distribution into two equal parts: 50% of wages are below the median wage, and 50% are above. The average wage in the municipality of Niederanven is €12,644.86. The median wage is €6,659; half the residents are below this income, the other half above it. The first decile (P10 in the table) indicates the wage level below which 10% of wage earners fall, and the 9th decile (P90) indicates the wage level below which 90% of wage earners fall. For the municipality of Niederanven, 10% of salaries are below €2,234, and 90% below €21,875. Various ratios of these values can be used to estimate the differences in salaries for the population of each municipality. The P90/10 ratio for the municipality of Niederanven is 9.79, which means that the people with the highest salaries receive at least 9.79 times more salary than the people at the bottom of the salary scale.

STATEC uses data from the General Inspectorate of Social Security for its calculations. Each year, the IGSS provides data for the month of March for all employees (working full-time or part-time) according to the employee's municipality of residence. Data on the self-employed are not included in the calculations. Pay information includes gross pay, bonuses and pay for hours not worked.
Wage levels and differentials vary between municipalities
The situation of the municipalities with regard to the declared salaries of their residents is very varied. Niederanven, Schuttrange, Kopstal, Strassen, Leudelange and Bertrange top the league table for median salary levels, at over €6,000 per month. At the other end of the scale, Rumelange, Differdange, Esch-sur-Alzette, Echternach, Reisdorf and Wiltz stand out with a median salary of less than €3,400.
Extract from the TABLE: The median wage is almost twice as high in Niederanven as in Rumelange
Map 1 : The municipalities with the highest median income are located in the Luxembourg City region and its suburbs
As the country's main economic and financial area, the Luxembourg City region, and especially its crown, generally has the highest salaries. This is due to the presence of numerous financial institutions, international companies and European organisations, which offer highly qualified and well-paid employment opportunities.
The more rural regions in the north of the country, outside the major urban areas, have relatively lower salaries. The same applies to the municipalities in the former coalfields in the south-west of the country. This is due to a more limited range of jobs and a less diversified economy. The presence of specific sectors of activity in certain municipalities also influences wage levels. Certain industries or sectors specific to Luxembourg, such as finance, technology or the professional services sector, offer higher salaries than other sectors. The level of qualification and experience of employees also plays an important role in salary differences. Positions requiring specialised skills, technical expertise or significant experience are better paid.
