Economic seminar - Increasing polarisation of commuting in Luxembourg

On 15 April 2024, STATEC, the University of Luxembourg and LISER organised an economic seminar entitled Une polarisation croissante des déplacements domicile-commuter au Luxembourg.

On this occasion, Yann Ferro, Geoffrey Caruso and Philippe Gerber presented the following topic:

Increasing polarisation of commuting in Luxembourg

Where do the country's inhabitants work? Where are residents' jobs mainly concentrated? What differentiates one employment centre from another? How is their commuting area structured? What is the intensity of the flows they receive? Each of these questions is important, because they stem directly from the separation of places of work and places of residence, and raise questions about general spatial planning and the supply and use of transport systems. The data from the latest census in 2021 provides an opportunity to analyse the commuting patterns of the population of Luxembourg, while measuring the changes from the 2011 census at municipal level.
