Tom Haas appointed Director of STATEC
At its meeting on 11 September 2024, the Government Council endorsed the proposal by Lex Delles, Minister for the Economy, SMEs, Energy and Tourism, to appoint Tom Haas as Director of STATEC, the National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies, with effect from 1 November 2024. Tom Haas will replace Serge Allegrezza, who will retire at the end of October 2024.
Tom Haas, 41, has 15 years' experience with the Institute, particularly in the field of analysis and synthesis. He successively held the posts of Research Officer in the ‘Studies, Forecasts and Research’ unit, then in the ‘Modelling and Forecasting’ unit, before being appointed Head of the ‘Modelling and Forecasting’ unit in 2020. Since 2023, he has been Head of the ‘Business Conditions, Modelling and Forecasting’ department and has joined STATEC's Management Committee. In this capacity, he represented STATEC in a number of institutions and at many meetings at both national (Tripartite, Economic and Social Council, etc.) and international level (European Commission, OECD, IMF, etc.). Tom Haas holds a Master's degree in modelling and econometrics from the University of Montpellier. He completed his training with a ‘Diplôme de Statisticien Economiste’ from the Ecole Nationale de la Statistique et de l'Administration Economique (ENSAE Paris) and a Master's degree in International Economics from the University of Paris Panthéon-Sorbonne.
STATEC is a scientifically and professionally independent administration under the authority of the Ministry of the Economy. It produces statistics, studies and analyses that provide a detailed, reliable and objective picture of Luxembourg society, and disseminates these data in a completely neutral manner. With over 220 employees, STATEC coordinates the national statistical system and represents it at international level.
Commenting on the nomination, Lex Delles said: ‘Our economy faces many challenges in the short, medium and long term, including maintaining our competitiveness, speeding up the energy transition and the ageing of the population. As the national institute for statistics and economic studies, STATEC plays a key role in providing a detailed, reliable and objective picture of Luxembourg society that helps decision-makers to make informed choices in response to these challenges. Tom Haas has many years' experience at STATEC, and his expertise and knowledge are recognised both internally and externally. He has been involved in a number of innovative projects that have contributed to the Institute's strategic development in recent years. He therefore proved to be the best choice to take over from Serge Allegrezza as Director of STATEC, while preserving his independence. I wish him every success in his new role, and wish Serge Allegrezza all the best in his retirement.
Tom Haas commented: ‘I'm honoured to be appointed Director of STATEC and I'm looking forward to putting my professional experience and enthusiasm to work for an organisation that I know inside out. Over the last few years, I have seen STATEC's teams demonstrate their ability to adapt to a wide range of challenges. STATEC needs to be responsive, proactive and innovative to help citizens and decision-makers make informed choices.
STATEC teams will be moving to the Twist building at Belval in October, and an official inauguration ceremony is scheduled for 20 September.
