European Statistics Competition 2025-2026 is here

Registration for the European Statistics Competition (ESC) 2025-2026 is open! The ninth edition of this competition, which aims to promote young people's curiosity for statistics, brings together students from 21 European countries.

Last year, 251 students representing 98 teams registered. In Luxembourg, this competition, which is an initiative of Eurostat (the statistical office of the European Union), is organized by STATEC, SCRIPT and the Luxembourg Statistical Society.

The ESC is a competition in which teams of secondary school students challenge each other by solving statistical exercises, hunting for information and producing analyses. The aim is to promote statistical literacy among students, while encouraging teachers to use new teaching materials based on official statistics.
The competition is divided into two phases:

1. the national phase, in which students compete against their peers in their own country;
2. the European phase, where finalists represent their country at the European level and are asked to produce short, creative videos on a statistical topic.

Teamwork to solve statistical exercises

All students in the last four years of secondary school in Luxembourg can participate. The national phase of the competition takes place between 20 October 2025 and 25 February 2026 and consists of two parts:

• an online questionnaire with statistical exercises
• a photo competition on the theme "The norm is the exception"

The top three teams in each age category (14-16 and 16-18 years old) will have the opportunity to win numerous high-tech prizes. The top four teams (two per age category) will then have the opportunity to participate in the European phase of the competition, which will start in March 2026.

Come and participate

Registration for the Luxembourgish national phase is now open until 12 December 2024. Please go to the European Statistics Competition homepage and to STATEC’s website for more information.
