STATEC and the GovTech Lab bring together data talent for the second Hackathon
From 14 to 16 October 2026, the GovTech Lab’s halls were once again buzzing with innovation, creativity and collaboration during the second STATEC Hackathon. Over three days of intense collaborative work, 45 participants divided into six teams took on an ambitious challenge: to design innovative solutions to make statistical information more accessible, more interactive and more useful to citizens, businesses and decision-makers.
Economists, data scientists, statisticians, researchers, developers, students and innovation enthusiasts pooled their skills to explore European data and uncover new perspectives on major economic and societal issues. Using data from Eurostat, the teams analysed and visualised vast sets of information to reveal new trends. Far more than just a technology competition, the STATEC Hackathon has established itself as a genuine laboratory of ideas.
“This second edition confirms the potential of bringing together data, technology and creative thinking. The projects have shown that it is possible to transform complex statistics into accessible and meaningful visualisations that help us understand Luxembourg’s major economic, social and environmental challenges,” emphasises Bastien Larue, head of the ‘Economic Conditions, Modelling and Forecasts’ unit and head of STATEC’s Analysis Committee. “We have seen the emergence of projects that bring statistics closer to the public and inspire a new data culture in Luxembourg.”
The projects were assessed by a jury according to several criteria, including the relevant use of data, innovation, technical robustness, reproducibility, the quality of the presentation and the functionality of the proposed solution. Three teams were recognised for the quality and impact of their solutions: Team Scrapped (SCRIPT / Ministère de l’Éducation nationale) won first place, Team ANF (Administration de la nature et des forêts) secured second place, and Team Besser (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology) finished third.
This second edition of the STATEC Hackathon demonstrates STATEC’s ambition to stimulate innovation around public data, to strengthen links between the statistics, technology and research communities, and to develop its capabilities in the fields of data science and data engineering. Organised in partnership with the GovTech Lab, the event also forms part of a shared commitment to promoting innovation for the benefit of the public sector. STATEC and the GovTech Lab would like to extend their warmest thanks to all the participants, the members of the judging panel and the partners who contributed to the success of this edition.
