3.1 Commodity classification
The goods are identified by an eight-digit code from the Combined Nomenclature (CN). The CN meets both the requirements of the Common Customs Tariff and of foreign trade statistics. European Communities legal acts adopt annual revisions of the CN. The main purpose of these updates is to modernize and simplify the nomenclature of goods.
