Structure of Earnings Survey

The Structure of Earnings Survey (SES) is a sample survey covering enterprises in Luxembourg. In 2010, the survey covers all economic activities except agriculture.

Survey objectives

The survey provides valuable information on salaries in different sectors. Data is collected on individual earnings and related to the profiles of the employees, the characteristics of their occupations and the profiles of their employers.

The Structure of Earnings Survey (SES) is conducted in EU Member States as well as EU candidate countries and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries. The results are published on the Eurostat site.

On the national level, the results are published in various STATEC publications.

Implementation

The survey is conducted every four years through questionnaires sent to a representative sample of enterprises. The sample is drawn through a two-stage random sampling:

  • a random sample of companies is drawn;
  • a random sample of employees is drawn within each selected company.

The most recent survey was being held in 2019 and concerned wages in 2018.

Legal framework

The survey is based on the European Framework Regulation (EC) No. 530/1999 of March 9, 1999 concerning structural statistics on earnings and on labour costs.

Privacy and confidentiality are guaranteed by the provisions of Article 16 of the law of 10 July 2011 on the organization of the National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC).
