Rent survey
Due to the abolition of the fiscal census, a new survey on the situation of rents in Luxembourg became necessary. In fact the fiscal census provided information to estimate rents and imputed rents in the national accounts for the period between two population censuses. This new rent survey will gradually replace the old rent survey carried out in the framework of the consumer price index (CPI). The CPI measures inflation and intervenes in the automatic wage indexation system.
Survey objectives
On the one hand, the data collected through the rent survey is used to estimate dwelling services in the national accounts for the years after 2011, where the latest population census took place. Thus, they play a role in the estimation of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product).
On the other hand, this survey should enhance the quality of the sample used for the calculation of the rent index of the CPI and better comply with the recommendations of Eurostat in this field. The data is finally used for the inflation calculation for Luxembourg.
Who participates?
Tenant households
How to participate?
Twice a year, a questionnaire is sent to a randomly selected sample of persons living in Luxembourg. Households occupying a rented dwelling will become part of the final rent sample. They keep being contacted twice a year in order to inform STATEC about the evolution of their rent. The rent sample will be renewed after a certain period.
