Regards 14/12 - Regards sur les acquisations de la nationalité luxembourgeoise

Since the coming into force of the new Luxembourgian nationality law (1st of January 2009) until the end of 2011, 11 738 persons did acquire voluntarily the Luxembourg citizenship. This number exceeds three times the level of the three years preceding the coming into force of the law. Persons of Portuguese nationality count for a third in the total of voluntary acquisitions. 35% of the persons acquiring the citizenship were born in Luxembourg. Furthermore, 2 500 minors did automatically acquire the nationality with their parents and some 4 000 people did acquire the citizenship because one of their parents was born in Luxemburg. All in all, more than 18 000 people acquired the Luxembourg citizenship from 2009 to 2011.
