Regards 07/22 - After a slight overmortality in 2020, mortality returns to a more normal level in 2021

In 2021, 4 489 deaths were recorded among the population living in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. This number of deaths is slightly down (-120 deaths) compared to the year 2020, which was characterised by the outbreak of the COVID-19 health crisis. Life expectancy at birth in Luxembourg has been little affected by the health crisis and stands at 84.8 years for women and 80.3 years for men. This is explained by the fact that COVID-19 mainly affected the oldest people, for whom the probability of dying is already the highest. The excess mortality observed following COVID-19 in Luxembourg is relatively contained compared to other European countries, especially in 2020.
