- ROTHSCHILD Kurt W. – Europe and the USA: Comparing What with What?, pp. 249-264
Recent divergencies in economic development have led to a growing literature comparing the US economy with (OECD-)Europe. The present article argues for a sceptical awareness of some limitations of these comparisons. By alternative groupings of countries the heterogeneous nature of European countries is underlined (limited to growth, inflation, and unemployment). This leads to the conclusion that to some extent comparisons between European nations or between the US and individual European nations could be valuable supplements to the generalizing US-Europe comparisons. - VOLCKART Oliver - State Building by Bargaining for Monopoly Rents, pp. 265-292
Starting from the proposition that the feudal political system functioned as a market for military security where no territorial monopolies and consequently no states in the modern sense of the word existed, state formation is here explained as the outcome of efforts to restrict competition in this market. The explanation draws on the theory of regulation which focuses on bargaining between interest groups and political authorities as the cause of the creation of entry barriers to markets. Which interest groups and authorities were concerned in late medieval and early modern state building is analyzed on the basis of three historical cases, two of which led to the creation of territorial monopolies of security while in one instance corresponding efforts failed. - HUNG MO Pak – Income Inequality and Economic Growth, pp. 293-316
We develop an analytical framework to investigate some plausible channels that income inequality affects economic growth. Our empirical study concludes that income inequality has significant negative effect on the rate of GDP growth. Among the channels suggested by recent literature, we find that the most important one is the transfer channel while the least important one is the human capital channel. However, the direct impact of income inequality on the rate of productivity growth accounts for more than 55 percent of its overall total effect. This indicates that the effects of income inequality on economic growth are much more complicated than what we have perceived or modeled. - USKALI Mäki - Kinds of Assumptions and Their Truth: Shaking an Untwisted F-Twist, pp. 317-336
In an insightful article published in this journal, Alan Musgrave (1981) has argued that once we distinguish between three types of assumptions, Milton Friedman’s F-twist – according to which the truth of the assumptions of an economic theory is irrelevant to its acceptability – can be untwisted. It is shown that once we bring in more clarity on the formal identity of the different kinds of assumptions, Musgrave’s contribution can be further defined: distinctions can be drawn between detectability and negligibility assumptions, and between domain and acceptability assumptions; the suggested gap between as-if assumptions and other kinds can be removed; another type, that of joint neglibility assumption, can be introduced; the untwisting of the F-twist can be accepted in all cases except in the case of early-step (heuristic) assumptions; and the art of paraphrase is shown to constitute the basis for Musgrave’s strategy and to have limits. - KLEVMARKEN Anders N. – Did the tax Cuts Increase Hours of Work?, A Statistical Analysis of a natural Experiment, pp. 337-362
Effects on hours worked of cuts in the Swedish income taxes are analyzed using longtitudinal data that cover periods before and after a major tax reform in 1991. The results show that working males probably changed their hours very little as a result of reduced marginal tax rates, while women increased their hours in the order of 10 percent. One can thus conclude that the tax reforms increased gender inequality in workhours. Most of this effect comes directly from the tax changes and not through a change in the after tax net wage, a result that is not explained by a conventional myopic labor supply model with a static budget
set.

- GERSBACH Hans - Promoting Product Market Competition to Reduce Unemployement in Europe: An Alternative Approach?, pp. 117 - 134
In this paper, we employ general equilibrium reasoning to review whether product market reforms could help to reduce unemployment in Europe. We consider three potential effects of product market reforms: lowering markups, fostering productivity gains and inducing a more rapid expansion of the product mix. We argue that product market reforms will help to reduce unemployment under most circumstances. Productivity improvements will increase aggregate unemployment only if workers are immobile and unemployment is concentrated in a few sectors. Employment effects remain positive or are even reinforced if wage adjustments occur. Using recent industry studies, we suggest that product market reforms can reduce unemployment significantly, but labor market reforms remain unavoidable nevertheless. - SOUSA-POZA Alfonso et SOUSA-POZA Andrés - Taking Another Look at the Gender/Job-Satisfaction Paradox, pp. 135-152
Labour-market conditions are, in general, less favourable for women than for men. It is therefore paradoxical that several studies reveal that women are more satisfied at work than men. We analyse this paradox with microdata from 21 countries. It is shown that this paradox does not exist in most of the countries analysed here, and, in most cases, can be explained by the different endowments of work-role inputs (e.g., work time) and outputs (e.g., pay) between genders. In Great Britain, the United States, and Switzerland, however, this paradoxical situation remains even after controlling for differences in work-role inputs and outputs. - HUCK Steffen et MULLER Wieland - Why the Rich Are Nastier Than the Poor - A note on the Distribution of Wealth , When Individuals Care for Pavoff Differentials, pp.153-160
In view of empirical and evolutionary findings on the relevance of relative payoffs we study - as a benchmark case - a model in which individuals maximize payoff differentials having the opportunity to invest in their relative standing by harming others. Interestingly, optimal investments are increasing in individuals' own wealth and decreasing in the wealth of others. - FARIA Joao Ricardo - What Happened to the Neanderthals? - The Survival Trap, pp. 161-172
This paper proposes a model that unifies and integrates four conjectures put forward to explain the extinction of the Neanderthals. The model shows that these hypotheses, considered together or individually, are not sufficient to guarantee the extinction of the Neanderthals. Moreover, a survival trap related to the economic incentives of Homo sapiens’ migration is essential to explain the fate of the Neanderthals. - SALLY David - I , Too, Sail Past: Odysseus and the Logic of Self-Control, pp.173 et s.
In opposition to previous studies that used only the image of the bound Odysseus, this paper examines the story of his encounter with the Sirens exegetically to glean specific propositions concerning rational behavior, self-control, and story-telling. These propositions are then tested against the behavior of alcoholics, both lost and reformed, both drowned and dried, and against the principles espoused by Alcoholics Anonymous.

- JONES Phillip et HUDSON John - Civic Duty and Expressive Voting: Is Virtue its Own Reward, pp. 3-16
Turnout at elections cannot be easily explained by reference to instrumental rationality. The probability that any individual voter will alter an electoral outcome is miniscule and the net expected utility from voting is likely to be negative. Instead, high rates of turnout are explained by the consumption gains arising from the act of voting. This paper distinguishes between utility derived from fulfilling a civic duty and utility derived from expressing a political preference. Both considerations affect turnout but a test of the determinants of the decision of whether to vote and the decision of how to vote reveals that perceptions of the importance of civic duty are important when deciding whether to vote. Differences in preference for the political parties, differences in perceptions of policy certainty and differences in the integrity attributed to representatives of political parties are important when explaining how individuals vote. The implication is that intrinsic motivation is important when individuals consider whether or not to vote and the utility from expressive voting is more relevant when explaining how individuals vote. - GLOBERMAN Steven , KOKKO Ari et SJOHOLM Fredrik - International Technology Diffusion: Evidence from Swedish Patent Data , pp.17-38
Using references in Swedish patent data, we examine technology sourcing in Swedish multi-national enterprises (MNEs) and non-multinational small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The results show that both types of firms are more likely to make references to countries with large patent stocks and to countries that are located close to Sweden. Trade and FDI also seem to facilitate the transfer of foreign technology to Sweden. However, trade contacts seem to be more important for technology sourcing in SMEs than in MNEs. Outward Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is a channel for the diffusion of foreign technology to both home-country MNEs and SMEs. - RÖTHELI F. Tobias - Producer's Expectations: Their Role in the Monetary Transmission Mechanism, pp. 39-50
This article relates to the view expressed by Pigou and Keynes that whatever factors affect the demand for goods it is ultimately producers’’ expectations and plans that determine the level of output. We build on this notion in order to address the question how changes in monetary policy affect output in Switzerland. For this purpose we study data on expected and actual output collected by the business cycle research center(KOF) at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zürich. The econometric analysis documents that monetary affect output only by their impact on expectations of entrepreneurs. This finding contradicts the new classical view of the propagation of monetary shocks. - WOLTER Stefan C. - Wage Expectations: A Comparison of Swiss and US Students, pp. 51-70
Wage expectations can play a significant role in a variety of economic areas. This study analyses the wage expectations of students who are on the verge of making a decision concerning their educational path or who have already reached such a decision. Since each student in our study has been asked to discuss expectations in relation to various educational scenarios, this data can be used to check certain human capital theory assumptions. It is possible to ascertain the wage effects which students expect from certain educational decisions. Moreover it is possible to assess the expected rates of return on education without asking the students directly. The results of this study make it clear that both in the USA and in Switzerland the wage expectations of students do not differ significantly from the cross-sectional labor market data, despite considerable heterogeneity in some cases.
