Do you feel safe walking alone at night?
If you were to ask Luxembourg residents this question, around one in five would answer in the negative. As part of the 2019/2020 Safety Survey, 21% of the population said they felt unsafe when walking alone in their neighbourhood at night. This proportion remained comparatively stable compared to 2013 (19%). Luxembourg residents therefore feel safer than their German neighbours. Even though Germany has a different density and structure of land use to Luxembourg, one in four people say they (tend to) feel (rather) unsafe at night (28%[1]). However, there are significant differences between men and women: women are twice as likely to feel unsafe as men and feel more vulnerable.

In addition to gender, experiences of violence play a role at an individual level. This means that people who have experienced psychological, physical, sexual or economic violence in the last 12 months feel more insecure overall.
