STATEC and GovTech Lab celebrate the first edition of the STATEC Hackathon

From 27 to 29 October 2025, the premises of STATEC and GovTech Lab buzzed with the sound of keyboards, ideas and collective energy during the first edition of the ‘STATEC Hackathon’. For three days, 53 participants divided into 13 teams tackled an ambitious challenge: transforming data into action, going beyond raw figures to visualise them through interactive dashboards that are accessible and useful to both citizens and decision-makers.

Economists, data scientists, developers, students and innovation enthusiasts explored, analysed and visualised data from STATEC's LUSTAT database, Eurostat and the Open Data Portal. Their mission: to transform data through innovative ideas and creative energy into concrete solutions that push the boundaries of what is possible when creativity meets technology. Armed with real data sets, each team sought to bring the figures to life by creating tools and prototypes capable of making the data more visual, more understandable and more impactful. The STATEC Hackathon was not just a technology competition: it was a real laboratory of ideas. Together, the participants demonstrated how collaboration and innovation can convert numbers into meaningful stories and tools that are useful to society.

"This hackathon demonstrates the power of data as a lever for innovation," declared Claude Lamboray, Head of the Methods and Quality Unit at STATEC's new Data Lab. "We have seen the emergence of projects that bring statistics closer to citizens and inspire a new data culture in Luxembourg. This creative energy fully reflects STATEC's new ambition: to make data speak in order to better understand and shed light on the country's economic, social and environmental challenges. "

Four teams - Outliers (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology), the GNUs (STATEC / STATEC Research), LNDS (Luxembourg National Data Service) and Artemis - were recognised for their relevance, use of data sources, innovation, reproducibility, robustness and ability to transform figures into real economic stories.
