Stable bankruptcies in the first quarter of 2025, increase in liquidations

According to the latest figures from the Ministry of Justice/STATEC, 301 companies were declared bankrupt and 51 were liquidated in the first quarter of 2025.

Bankruptcies

The number of bankruptcies remained stable in the first quarter of 2025 (301 compared to 300 judgements in the first quarter of 2024). According to initial estimates, the potential loss of salaried jobs linked to bankruptcies is down by more than 27% compared to the first quarter of 2024.

It is in construction, the sector most affected by bankruptcies since 2023, that the situation eased significantly in the 1st quarter of 2025, both in absolute numbers (with 50 bankruptcies, 15 fewer than in the 1st quarter of 2024), and in terms of potential loss of salaried employment (-43%).

The trade sector recorded 37 bankruptcies in the first quarter of 2025, down 21% compared with the first quarter of 2024, as did salaried job losses (-55%).

There were also 38 bankruptcies in the Horesca sector (+31% compared with the 1st quarter of 2024), although initial estimates of job losses are down (-22%).

Liquidations

Liquidations were up 55% in the first quarter of 2025, a development that must be qualified, as their number was at a historically low level in the first quarter of 2024. About 45% of the companies liquidated during the period under review are holding companies and investment funds.

All these themes can be consulted in STATEC's ‘Bankruptcies and Liquidations’ Dashboard, published on 16 april 2025. The statistics on bankruptcies are based on the record of judicial decisions, taken from the Trade Register and dating from 14 april2025 for the most recent data.

The number of bankruptcies is calculated as the sum of ‘openings’ or ‘reopenings’ minus the bankruptcies reported from the judicial procedure ‘judgments and rulings declaring bankruptcy’. These figures are provisional.
