Unemployment rate at 6.5%
The number of jobseekers registered with ADEM, residing in Luxembourg and available for the labour market, reached 20,269 as at 30 September 2026. This figure represents a year-on-year increase of 7.1%, or 1,349 more people than at the end of September 2025.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate, calculated by STATEC, stands at 6.5%.
The group of the most highly qualified jobseekers has seen a sharp increase, although the pace of growth is tending to slow (+10.6% year-on-year, compared with +19.0% recorded in August). An analysis of trends by age group also shows that those most affected by the increase in the number of jobseekers are aged 16 to 29 (+10.7% year-on-year), while those aged 45 to 64 are slightly less affected, with a year-on-year increase of +7.6%.
In terms of occupations sought by jobseekers, increases continue to be observed in IT (category M18 of the ROME occupational classification), cleaning and industrial sanitation (K22), secretarial and administrative support (M16), banking (C12), food preparation (G16), assistance with daily living (K13), accounting and management (M12), and law (K19). The number of jobseekers is also increasing in warehousing, goods handling and moving (N11), as well as occupations related to natural areas and green spaces (A12).
In September, ADEM recorded 3,430 new registrations of resident jobseekers, a figure that remained stable compared with September 2025.
The number of recipients of full unemployment benefits stood at 9,583¹ at the end of September 2026. Jobseekers undergoing external professional redeployment, as well as those receiving a waiting allowance (IA) or a professional waiting allowance (IPA), numbered 1,607. Furthermore, 4,418 people residing in Luxembourg were participating in an employment measure, representing a relatively modest increase of 1.2% compared with September 2025.
A total of 1,121 non-resident jobseekers registered with ADEM in September 2026 (+19.5% year-on-year), bringing their total number to 4,383 at the end of the month. Although still significant, this increase has slowed noticeably (+22.7% year-on-year, compared with +30.5% recorded last month). Among those registered, 2,466 have external professional redeployment status and are therefore eligible for financial assistance provided by ADEM under the same conditions as residents. For this latter category, the year-on-year increase continues to slow, standing at 7.5% (compared with 8.5% in August). The other non-residents registered with ADEM did so voluntarily, without being entitled to any financial assistance. As at 30 September 2026, they numbered 1,917, representing a substantial year-on-year increase (+49.8%).
In September, 999 non-resident jobseekers with external professional redeployment status received full unemployment benefits; a further 1,911 received an IA or IPA.
As for employers, they reported 3,300 new job vacancies to ADEM last month, representing a slight year-on-year decrease of 1.5% compared with 2025. A total of 6,632 job vacancies were thus available as at 30 September, a figure that remained stable year-on-year.
The occupations recording the strongest year-on-year increases in job vacancies are in the fields of paramedical care (J15 of the ROME occupational classification), social, socio-educational and socio-cultural activities (category K12), information and telecommunications systems (M18), food retail and food trades (D11), as well as assistance with daily living (K13).
