Numerous indicators of well-being increased in 2021
For the year 2021, the available indicators of the Luxembourg Index of Well-being (LIW) are those of the domains employment, education, health, the indicator on difficulties in making ends meet of the domain "income and wealth" as well as the GDP/head for the year 2021. All of these indicators rebounded in 2021, some very strongly after a more or less significant decline in 2020.
The most substantial rebounds are observed for the indicators that experienced the largest drops in 2020: adult continuing education, unemployment rate, and making ends meet. The adult continuing education indicator has not yet recovered to its pre-Pandemic COVID-19 level
In the longer term, the education indicators remain the only ones to have improved since 2010: higher education (147 points index base 100 in 2010) and adult continuing education (133 points). On the other hand, the employment indicators, apart from the employment rate (105 points), are still lagging behind, below the 2010 level despite an increase in 2021: unemployment rate (87 points) and involuntary part-time work (85 points). Health status is the only indicator that has not declined in 2020, on the contrary it has been growing continuously since 2018 and will return to its 2010 level in 2021 (101 points). On the other hand, greenhouse gas emissions are on the rise after a sharp drop in 2020, resulting in a drop in the index in 2021. Opposite these indicators, GDP/head (137 points) has rebounded strongly, attesting to the strong economic recovery in 2021.
