Survey on tourism
The tourism survey focuses on the tourism practices of residents. It makes it possible to follow the evolution of business and leisure tourism of residents year after year. It also makes it possible to compare these developments at European level.
Your participation is important even if you did not partake in any touristic activity in the last quarter. This information allows us to measure the importance of tourism activity among the resident population.
Questionnaires
Survey objectives
This survey focuses on the leisure and business tourism practices of residents. The questionnaire covers both overnight and non-overnight tourism. It looks at the characteristics of the stay: country of destination, type of destination, length of stay, mode of accommodation and means of transport, amount of expenditure, etc. Each respondent answers several sets of questions on leisure and business trips made during a quarter, as well as a few questions on day trips made during the same quarter.
This survey helps policy makers to understand the evolution of Luxembourg society, the changes in tourism behaviour, the growing importance of short trips and day trips, the introduction of the internet in the booking process...
Who participates?
The survey is addressed to all residents of Luxembourg aged between 15 and 85 years, with the exception of people living in collective households. A sample of 4,000 residents is drawn at random from the National Register of Natural Persons (RNPP) every quarter. These people are invited to participate in the survey by mail.
Survey period
The survey is conducted in four waves of six to eight weeks, launched in early January, April, July and October.
Legal framework
The content of the survey and the quality requirements to be met are laid down in Regulation (EC) No 692/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 6 July 2011 on European statistics on tourism and repealing Council Directive 95/57/EC of the Council.
The regulation defines the common framework on which the Luxembourg questionnaire was built. It covers leisure and business tourism practices, with and without overnight stay: destination, duration, accommodation, means of transport, expenditure, ... Each respondent answers several sets of questions on leisure and business trips made during a quarter, as well as some questions on day trips.
Your participation in this survey is mandatory according to the law of 10 July 2011 on the organisation of the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC). This legal provision aims to contribute to the quality of the statistics produced, by enabling STATEC to collect reliable and sufficiently representative data on the resident population.

Specific questions on the tourism survey
Why this survey, how does it concern me?
The purpose of this survey is to find out more about residents' tourism practices. It covers a wide range of topics relating to leisure and business travel (destination, duration, reason, means of transport, accommodation and expenditure, etc.). The results are used by researchers, journalists, teachers and public authorities. 4,000 of the country's residents are selected each quarter. They represent the diversity of people living in the country. You are one of them.
Who can/has to participe in this survey?
For methodological reasons, only people who have received an official request by post from STATEC will complete a questionnaire. They have been selected at random from the National Register of Natural Persons (more information on guichet.lu). In rare cases, the questionnaire may be completed by a relative, provided that the latter is very familiar with the person's tourist habits and can answer for them.
Is there an obligation to participate?
Yes. The refusal to give the information within the prescribed time limit or providing incorrect information is punishable by fines (Law of STATEC of 10 July 2011).
I haven't made any trips, do I still have to complete the questionnaire?
Yes, so that the results reflect the reality of the travel habits of all residents, meaning those who have travelled and those who have not. If you have not travelled, it will only take you a few minutes to answer the questionnaire.
Is the data confidential and anonymous?
Your name and address will be exclusively used in order to contact you for the survey. Your personal data will not appear in the file containing your answers. Your responses will only be used for statistical purposes , and never for administrative or tax purposes. The individual information will never be disclosed. Every STATEC agent and survey staff working on behalf of STATEC is personally responsible for the strict compliance with this statistical secret. Failure to comply may result in disciplinary measures and penalties.
In what languages can I participate?
In Luxemburgish, French, German or English.
How long does it take?
10 to 20 minutes depending on the number of trips you made.
I closed the Internet questionnaire while I was filling in, what do I have to do?
If you closed the questionnaire and you had not yet answered all the questions, the data you entered remain accessible. You may continue the questionnaire by logging back to the survey using the personal access code on your invitation letter. You will be guided directly to the last question you opened.
When and where can I see the results of the survey?
STATEC publishes annual results in summer the year following data collection (for example, the results from the survey conducted in 2024 are available in summer 2025).The procedure is lengthy, since it requires the results for all 4 quarters of the corresponding year to be taken into consideration. In the meantime, you can consult older publications already available on the STATEC website.
May I register for another wave? May I get removed from the lists?
Participants in this survey are randomly selected to ensure a true picture of reality. When you are selected to be part of a survey, STATEC cannot replace you with someone else. You may not be removed from the sample list, for it would no longer be a random sample and the quality of the results would thus be affected.
