Regards 01/25 - Panorama of the Luxembourg labour market on May 1st

To mark Labour Day, STATEC highlights the key employment figures for Luxembourg. In 2024, the Grand Duchy had 489,000 employees, nearly half of whom (47%) were cross-border workers, mainly from France (126,000). Only one in four employees is a Luxembourg national. Luxembourg also stands out for its high wages, ranking second in the European Union with a median hourly wage of EUR 24. The gender pay gap is reversed, with women earning on average more than men, making Luxembourg an exception in Europe. The overall employment rate fell slightly in 2024, but female employment continues to grow. The frequency of Sunday work is also notable, with a significant proportion of employees — almost one in four — working on Sundays, either regularly or occasionally. Health appears to be a key factor in employment, with the vast majority of residents (80%) feeling in good health, a factor that directly influences their participation in the labour market. Finally, since the end of 2024, employment growth has slowed significantly, falling to 1%, and to only 0.5% excluding the public sector.
