STATEC Research is the research department of STATEC, the National Institute of Statistical and Economic Studies of Luxembourg.

STATEC Research analyses Luxembourg’s social and economic developments, contributes to international scientific debates, provides valuable insights for decision makers, and represents Luxembourg at international institutions. Its research focuses on well-being and quality of life, entrepreneurship and productivity.

News

On 2 July, we released the 2025/2026 Luxembourg Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Report (Pdf). This year’s report, and additional material, is available at this link.
Our Measuring Progress Annual Workshop in June brought together leading researchers to discuss how societies can create better lives for current and future generations, with 35 presentations covering individual-level determinants of well-being, AI, beyond-GDP measures, the environment, and quality of life. Keynote speakers Ida Kubiszewski and Andrew Oswald inspired discussions on sustainable well-being and the impact of social media on human well-being.
A new working paper “LuxKLEMS: Productivity trends and drivers in Luxembourg”, coauthored by Golnaz Amjadi, Xi Chen and Charles-Henri DiMaria, has been released on STATEC’s Économie & Statistiques Working Paper Series.
A new working paper “Determinants of profitability of firms in Luxembourg”, authored by Evgenii Monastyrenko and Giovanni Mangiarotti, explores the drivers of firm profitability in Luxembourg. The study provides an explanation for Luxembourg’s low profitability ranking among European economies when assessed using the Gross Operating Rate (GOR). The study featured on paperjam.lu and lessentiel.lu.
STATEC Research, with a contribution from Cesare Riillo, in collaboration with the Ministry of the Economy and the Banque centrale du Luxembourg, provided Luxembourg data for the report Financing SMEs and Entrepreneurs 2026: An OECD Scoreboard. The National Productivity Board report was released in February, with two chapters prepared by our productivity team: one examining the role of intangible assets in driving productivity growth, and another tracking key productivity indicators in Luxembourg.
On 10^th February, Golnaz Amjadi presented the chapter titled “LuxKLEMS: Productivity trends and drivers in Luxembourg” at one of STATEC’s economic Seminars.
The GEM report received notable recognition and was highlighted on science.lu under the title “Entrepreneuriat au Luxembourg : 9,9 % des résidents ont lancé une entreprise en 2024”. It was also selected as one of the 10 studies for October by Research Luxembourg, in the article titled “Entrepreneurship on the Rise in Luxembourg, with AI and Sustainability in Focus”.
On 16^th October 2025, Cesare Riillo presented the main findings from the 2024/2025 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) report for Luxembourg, titled “Entrepreneurship grows in Luxembourg as AI provokes both optimism and fear” at the House of Entrepreneurship in Kirchberg.
Highlighted by Research Luxembourg as one of ten research results in July, Francesco Sarracino and Kelsey O’Connor published “Governments should prioritize well-being over economic growth” in the renowned journal Nature Human Behaviour. See the news release here.
In July, we hosted the International Society for Quality-Of-Life Studies (ISQOLS) conference in Luxembourg, welcoming 470 participants from nearly 70 countries over 4 days.

Research Areas

Productivity

The team conducts research on the interplay between economic activity and the environment, the role of Luxembourg in global production processes, and the business cycle of Luxembourg. Our research, which supports the National Productivity Board of Luxembourg in developing its evaluations and policy proposals, regularly features in the annual reports of the Board.

Entrepreneurship

We also conducts studies on entrepreneurship, its drivers and consequences, emphasizing the personal and societal traits that encourage or hinder entrepreneurship. The team participates in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), an international research programme designed to gather and analyse comparative data on entrepreneurship. As part of this effort, the team conducts the GEM annual surveys for Luxembourg and releases the annual report on the state of entrepreneurship in the country.

Well-being and Quality of Life

The well-being team develops new ways of assessing social and economic progress, beyond traditional income-based measures of welfare. The research focuses on the causes and consequences of well-being, on the interplay between social and environmental sustainability, and on well-being for policymaking. The team first implemented the project PIBien-être, which monitors and assesses quality-of-life in Luxembourg using a multidimensional set of indicators. The team hosts international conferences and runs the webinar series “Measuring Progress”. In 2025, STATEC and STATEC Research will host the 30th anniversary conference of ISQOLS, the International Society for Quality of Life Studies.

The team’s research is disseminated through reports, wide audience releases, and scientific articles.
