Research Areas
STATEC Research is the research department of STATEC, the National Institute of Statistical and Economic Studies of Luxembourg. Our mission involves analysing the social and economic development of Luxembourg, contributing to international scientific debates, providing valuable insights for policymakers, and representing Luxembourg in international institutions. Studies cover the areas of productivity, entrepreneurship, well-being, social cohesion, and sustainability.
Productivity
STATEC Research conducts research on productivity, the interplay between economic activity and the environment, Luxembourg's role in global value chains and the business cycle. The team compiles productivity indicators for Luxembourg's economy, and analysis, which support the National Productivity Board (Conseil National de la Productivité) in developing its evaluations and policy proposals. We investigate the impact of intangible capital on productivity and examine how organizational capital influence productivity through management practices. In a trade-oriented economy, productivity also depends on integration within global value chains. We analyse Luxembourg's position within these chains. Lastly, we contribute to the production of both short- and long-term economic growth forecasts, and analyse Luxembourg’s business cycle. These activities inform our contributions to working groups and initiatives at the OECD and the European Commission.
Results from our research and analysis appear on the National Productivity Board’s annual report, which is available at this link.
Entrepreneurship
Through its involvement in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), an international research program designed to gather and analyse data on entrepreneurship, STATEC Research provides unique comparative indicators on entrepreneurial activities in Luxembourg. As part of this initiative, the team coordinates annual surveys and releases regular reports on the state of entrepreneurship in Luxembourg. The team also conducts studies on the drivers and consequences of entrepreneurial activity, highlighting the personal and societal traits that encourage or hinder entrepreneurship. Additionally, the team contributes to international initiatives promoted by the OECD, including the OECD Scoreboard on Financing SMEs and Entrepreneurs. In 2024, the team organized the Entrepreneurship for Sustainability Workshop, which brought together national and international experts to explore how entrepreneurship can embrace and advance sustainable practices. The GEM Luxembourg Report 2023-2024 was presented at this workshop.
Well-being and Quality of Life
STATEC Research seeks new ways of assessing social and economic progress, beyond traditional income-based measures of welfare. The team focuses on three main areas of research: the causes and consequences of well-being; social cohesion and sustainability; and well-being for policymaking. The team first implemented the project PIBien-être, which monitors and assesses quality-of-life in Luxembourg using a multidimensional set of indicators. Since 2021, the team has been hosting a series of online seminars called “Measuring Progress”, followed by an annual in-person conference starting from 2022. The first event, "Well-being 2022: Knowledge for informed decisions" attracted approximately 100 participants from around the world. Building on its success, the team launched the annual “Measuring Progress Workshop” which serves as a platform for researchers and practitioners in quality of life to exchange knowledge and insights. The team is a partner in the WISER project, funded by a Horizon Europe grant. The project’s aim is to provide theoretical insights and empirical evidence on the feasibility of creating socially and environmentally sustainable economies in which people can lead satisfactory lives. In addition, team members contribute to the work of international institutions such as the OECD and the United Nations, focusing on subjective well-being and on the development of new quality of life indicators.
Our Network
STATEC Research participates in working groups at international organisations such as the European Commission and the OECD – which deal with themes that are high on the national policy agendas. The team collaborates with academic institutions and universities in Luxembourg and abroad. We also host visiting scholars and assist visiting students at the onset of their research careers. STATEC Research represents Luxembourg in international institutions such as the OECD, EUROSTAT, and the European Commission.
Our research results are disseminated through conferences, seminars, and peer-reviewed publications. The team's papers have appeared in learned journals, including the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Economics & Human Biology, Ecological Economics, Economic Modelling, European Economic Review, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Kyklos, Macroeconomic Dynamics, Oxford Economic Papers, Research Policy, Review of Income and Wealth, Small Business Economics, Social Indicators Research, Structural Change and Economic Dynamics, and World Development. Additionally, the team contributes to the public economic debate by organizing international conferences, workshops, and seminars, as well as compiling reports on issues of critical interest to the public and policymakers. Team members also serve on the executive committee and board of directors of the International Society for Quality-of-Life Studies, are members of the World Wellbeing Panel, and act as associate editors for the Journal of Happiness Studies.
