1 187 bankruptcies and 149 liquidations in 2025

According to the latest figures from the Ministry of Justice/STATEC, 369 companies were declared bankrupt and 20 were liquidated during the fourth quarter of 2025.

Bankruptcies

In 2025, 1,187 bankruptcies were declared, representing a 2.4% increase compared to 2024 (1,159 bankruptcies). The number of bankruptcies among companies with at least one employee remained stable compared to the previous year (563 bankruptcies), while the number of companies with more than 10 employees fell by 20%.

With regard to the various sectors of activity (excluding holding companies and investment funds), contrasting trends can be observed. While the number of bankruptcies is down in the construction sector (-32 judgments, -16%), it is up in commerce (+25 judgments, +15%), in specialized, scientific, and technical activities (+12 judgments, +12%), and in the hospitality sector (+9 judgments, +8%).

Bankruptcies led to 3,109 potential job losses in 2025

Potential job losses[1] caused by bankruptcies in 2025 are down 3.5% compared to 2024. Although these figures are still provisional, they indicate that the situation appears to be stabilizing in 2025. The sectors most affected by the loss of salaried jobs in 2025 are construction (973 losses, -22%), administrative and support services (547 losses, +140%), hospitality (501 losses, -8%), and retail (397 losses, -13%).

Liquidations

45% increase in liquidations compared to 2024

Luxembourg courts ordered the liquidation of 149 companies in 2025, representing a 45% increase compared to 2024 (103). The significant decline in liquidations from 2023 onwards is structural in nature, with the entry into force of the law of October 28, 2022, establishing the procedure for administrative dissolution without liquidation, with the aim of simplifying procedures for companies with no assets and no employees (“shell companies”). For more information, please refer to the 2024 judicial report[2]. As in the past, the largest number of companies liquidated in 2025 are holding companies and investment funds (38%).

All these topics can be consulted in the “Bankruptcies and Liquidations” Dashboard published by STATEC on January 15, 2026. The bankruptcy statistics are based on court decisions recorded in the Commercial Register, with the most recent data dating from January 12, 2026.

The number of bankruptcies is calculated as the sum of “openings” and “reopenings,” minus bankruptcies reported in the judicial procedure “judgments and declarations of bankruptcy.” The figures are provisional.
