Trust in official statistics. The determinants of trust, political independence and use of STATEC’s data

The data collected in 2021 is part of the project OECD TrustLab survey administered to the Luxembourg during the period May-June 2021. The Trustlab project combines cutting-edge techniques from behavioural sciences and experimental economics with an in-depth investigation of the political and contextual determinants of trust in others and institutions.
Survey on trust in official statistics

This publication presents the main results of the confidence survey conducted in 2018. For the online data collection, STATEC commissioned the company TNS/Ilres.
STATEC develops, produces and disseminates official statistics in accordance with the principles of the European Statistics Code of Practice, which is the cornerstone of the common quality framework of the European Statistical System. In accordance with the Code, STATEC regularly monitors public opinion on confidence in the statistics it produces and on the quality of its services.
A survey on user’s trust in official statistics

This publication presents the results of the online survey carried out by TNS/Ilres on behalf of STATEC among subscribers to the Newsletter of STATEC and among persons registered in the MyPanel database maintained by the company TNS/Ilres. The survey provides information according to socio-demographic characteristics on the respondents' general knowledge of the Luxembourg economy, the level of awareness of STATEC in relation to other institutions, the confidence of users in various national organisations and certain official statistics.
Users also express their views on the relevance of statistical information, the accuracy and reliability of data, the timeliness of information dissemination and the independence of statistics from political considerations.
Finally, the survey also provides information on the popularity of the various STATEC publications and their modes of dissemination (paper, Internet) as well as the degree of user satisfaction.

The article examines the determinants of trust in official statistics, the use of data provided by STATEC and the perception of STATEC's independence from political power. Logit regression analyses highlight the main explanatory factors from a survey conducted in late 2011 and early 2012 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of STATEC. The results provide some interesting lessons for the improvement of the Luxembourg statistical system.
User satisfaction survey 2010 : STATEC seen from outside

Satisfaction surveys are designed to gather public opinion on the quality, relevance and accessibility of statistical data. They are carried out in the framework of the implementation of the European Statistics Code of Practice, principle 11 of which provides for surveys to examine e.g. whether the available statistics correspond to users' needs.
The satisfaction survey carried out in 2010 included a section on satisfaction:
- of the participants STATEC’s surveys conducted in 2009,
- users of the information services provided by STATEC.
The survey also tried to assess the level of awareness of STATEC. These four aspects help to assess the image of STATEC as perceived by respondents and data users.
Citizen-user satisfaction with the quality of public services
The « Ministère de la Fonction Publique et de la Réforme Administrative (MFPRA) » commissioned a survey of households by TNS/Ilres in June 2008.

STATEC users’ satisfaction survey
As part of the implementation of the European Statistics Code of Practice, the Quality Delegates launched a satisfaction survey among the main users of STATEC. The objective of this survey was to assess the perception of the quality of the official statistics published by STATEC, by the different types of users.
