Financial activities

The Luxembourg financial centre is an international financial centre. As such, it has a key place in the economy of Luxembourg. The pillars of today's financial sector are the interbank market, private banking, the administration and distribution of investment funds and the different supporting activities. More recently, insurance (especially life insurance under the free provision of services regime) and reinsurance (reinsurance captives) activities have, in turn, been growing.

Agriculture and forestry

The relative importance of agriculture in the Luxembourg is still decreasing. Small farms have given way to farms of 50 hectares and over, which represent more than half of the active farms. The farms are concentrated in the North and also the East of the country which is, with the banks of the Moselle, an important wine-growing region. More than 50% of the active farms specialise in the breeding of herbivores.

This part contains data on agriculture itself, wine-growing, forestry, hunting and fishing.

Science and technology

Information and communication technologies (ITC) are having a growing economic and social impact. The political decision-makers are trying to create the necessary conditions for the new technologies to be quickly integrated into daily social and economic life. As a result, there is a need for statistics over a wide range of topics specific to the information society.

Since 2002, regular surveys have been carried out to collect data relating to the human and financial R&D resources at businesses with less than 10 employees from the main sectors considered to be active in R&D. A second set of surveys considers public bodies with research activities, organisations with research activities mainly funded by the public authorities and also higher education bodies stating that they carry out research activities.

The Community innovation survey (CIS) represents the main source of data on innovation. Its purpose is to provide comparable data across the Community.
