Preface
This publication aims to provide readers with a statistical overview of businesses in Luxembourg, along with an insight into the official business statistics compiled by STATEC.
The introduction offers a concise update on the trends of selected key statistical indicators, already featured in previous editions. These indicators are designed to present a broad picture of the economic situation, with the intention of sparking an initial analysis from attentive and curious readers. In-depth findings are presented in the subsequent sections of the publication.
This document is structured around several central questions: What are the main economic sectors in Luxembourg? How many people are employed in them? How did employment and the number of high-growth enterprises evolve between 2021 and 2022?
It also looks at trends over time in terms of workforce and number of bakery and pastry businesses, as well as their productivity compared to neighbouring countries.
As for the most recent data, STATEC analyses several themes: the share of different energy sources and high-tech products in Luxembourg’s total imports, the countries of origin of these products, the evolution of the total surface area of residential buildings in Luxembourg's regions, vehicle registrations by fuel type, and international road freight transport.
The study also explores businesses’ access to public financial support, as well as the intensity of research and development (R&D) activity in the country, with particular attention to the presence of female researchers.
In the area of information and communication technologies, the analysis focuses on the share of companies using at least one artificial intelligence technology, the most commonly adopted solutions, and the reasons why some technologies may have been discontinued.
Finally, for a more informed audience wishing to carry out their own data analysis, insights are provided into the actual availability of annual accounts filed by Luxembourg enterprises with the business register managed by STATEC. Reflections are also offered on the potential use of these data for evaluating indicators of companies’ financial health, both at national and European level.
Each question-and-answer section is structured to deliver a clear summary—either in graphic form or as traditional text. The core message is then further developed in the main body. For readers wishing to delve deeper into specific topics, references to additional sources are provided, including statistical tables published on Luxembourg’s statistics portal and on European websites.
